Favorite Disney Things ~ Purple Road Signs

Favorite Disney Thing #26 - Purple Road Signs - Yes, you know the moment. That moment you finally see those big beautiful purple rectangles! I sure do love those big purple signs of love! They guide me to my happy place. They tell me things like, "Magic Kingdom Straight Ahead" or "Disney's Pop Century Next Right" They scream, "You are finally here!" They welcome me 'home'!

Why purple? Well, I'm not sure, but here is what I could find:

The Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID) is the immediate governing jurisdiction for the land of the Walt Disney World Resort. The RCID includes the cities of Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, and unincorporated RCID land. The roads on Disney Property are maintained by the 'RCID Department of Public Works'. Reedy Creek is a pseudo-town set up by Walt Disney in order to streamline operations. The purple signs denote a change in jurisdiction from Orange County to the Reedy Creek Improvement District. The signage on the freeways is very similar to what you would find on normal state-maintained freeways; it is big and overhead. Instead of green, the background is purple. "EXIT ONLY" tabs are red, rather than yellow. Arrows are black circles with white arrows inside. On surface roads, smaller versions are used; many have 'Mickey ears' at the top, with a white arrow in one. Source: disney.wikia.com and everything2.com

I figure that Disney simply wants us to know that we aren't in Kansas anymore; no, we are officially in Disney World. They go to great lengths to immerse you into everything, so why not the roads we must travel, too. Since people have to drive (or ride) to where they are going, they are going to need to know which way to go; therefore the signs are designed to be similar enough to what we see on regular state highways, BUT different enough to remind us that we are on Disney Property, 'Where Dreams Come True'!
